Resolution up to 16X present HD displays! The 2010 decade will produce technological advancements at an exponential pace.Ultra-high definition refers to the 4K resolution of 3840 by 2160 pixels, which offers four times the resolution of the current 1080p high-def displays, and 8K resolution, which has 7680 by 4320 pixels, or about 16 times the resolution of today’s HD sets.
Don’t look for this soon. For the next couple of years, television manufacturers will be concentrating on 3-D (unfortunately) and integrating Internet features. The Internet will features will hold, but 3D will bomb as consumers look for better value as saturation for the present HD televisions occurs.
There will be a lengthy adoption process, similar to that which we have recently experienced with the shift to a digital format. But as consumer electronics manufacturers continue to look for new features that allow them to maintain better margins on their sets and production studios attempt to attract larger viewing bases, the limits to viewing reproduction will only be set by our technological bounds.
Digital cinemas are already exposing consumers to higher resolution 4K content. Production studios are already converting and scanning films at these higher resolutions. There are even cameras allowing the production using digital techniques in 4K resolution. Plans to market early ultra HD sets will likely to be to those who want to replicate the digital cinema experience in the home.
Japanese broadcasters have already done test transmissions of 4K and 8K content but these transmissions required a huge amount of bandwidth. Because of this bandwidth requirement, early adoption will be component based (DVD, Internet, etc) or terrestrial broadcast. Cable companies will push back because of the constriction of their broadcast bandwidth which in turn will allow the financially weaker media companies to delay adoption to the higher standards.
Nonetheless, the “crystal ball” reveals… by the mid 2020s, Ultra HD will be available and (adjusting for inflation) will cost you similarly to those sets of today.
